A species of bear survived because Native Americans never told Europeans that it existed!

The Kermode bear, also know as a "spirit bear" is a subspecies of the American Black Bear that lives in British Columbia, Canada.
The bear is currently an endangered species, as expets have estimated that there are about 400-1,000 left. On average, the Kermode bear is 300lbs, and stands at about 6 feet tall.
Approximately 1/10th of the Kermode bear population has a creamy white colored coat. Scientists have noted that bears with a whiter coat are around 30% more effective at catching fish in rivers than bears with other coat colors!
The reason the Kermode bear is nicknamed "The Spirit Bear" is because of the history that the bear has to Native American cultures. It is believed that because of the bears size and color diversity, it was considered sacred - thus it was never hunted by the Native Americans.
Furthermore, the Native Americans never told European trappers about the bear, because they knew it would be hunted to extinction!
