Turkey has seen a sharp increase in the number of people living alone. About 1 million people in the country live by themselves, an increase of 70% in a decade.
The government seems to take an issue with this. New building rules basically ban studio apartments because they require all flats to have at least one separate bedroom or 'alcove' of 26 sqft or more.
Critics decry this as a not-so-covert effort to force traditional values onto them. Some people go so far as saying these are made to force people into marriage.
This creates a problem for young Turks because affordable housing is already expensive. Now they might be forced to live with their parents or roommates because they won't be able to afford these bigger units.
